Lost Food Or Medicine In Park Slope Blackout? Get Paid By Con Ed

Con Ed customers who were forced to throw out food or medicine due to power outages in Boerum Hill/Park Slope can get payback—literally.

PARK SLOPE, NY — Con Edison customers who were forced to throw out food or medicine after power outages caused by underground system problems from melting snow and salt can now get payback – literally.

Following last week’s announcement that Con Edison would reimburse customers who experienced outages lasting more than 12 hours within a 24-hour period, Council Member Shahana Hanif, who represents District 39, said the utility is now offering residents up to $850 in reimbursements.

The Park Slope area was hit hard, with nearly 1,600 customers losing power as the outage dragged on and temperatures fell back into the teens.

According to Con Edison, melting snow mixed with road salt damaged underground electrical equipment, knocking out two major power lines serving the area.

During the outages, some residents lost power entirely, while others experienced disruptions to only certain utilities, officials said.

Con Edison said it will reimburse both residential and commercial customers for food spoilage if their service was interrupted due to the winter storm. Claims over $250 must include an itemized list and proof of loss, such as cash register tapes, store or credit card receipts, canceled checks, or photographs of the spoiled items.

Customers can apply for reimbursement at coned.com/. Reimbursement claims can also be processed over the phone at (800) 752-6633, Hanif said.

Customers will have until March 2 to file claims, officials said.
