PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — A man who tried to rob a smoke shop on Fifth Avenue in broad daylight on Sunday ended up getting stabbed by one of the employees, police said.

Donald Fields, an 18-year-old from Brooklyn, went into the 233 Fifth Ave. smoke shop just after 12 p.m. and took out an imitation handgun to force a 25-year-old employee behind the counter, police said.

But once they were behind the counter, the employee took out a knife he had under the counter and stabbed Fields in the stomach.

Police charged Fields with first-degree robbery, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.

A witness told the New York Post that Fields also had an accomplice who was acting as lookout when he got stabbed, but police said no other arrests have been made so far. The accomplice acted as a passerby and was on the phone as the witness tried to control Fields' bleeding while they waited for first responders, the witness said. He told police when they got there that he didn't know Fields.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
