Woodland Brawlers Still Free Weeks After Park Slope Fight: Cops

PARK SLOPE, NY — The Woodland Bar may be closed, but the case of a brawl and stabbing at the popular-yet-controversial Park Slope watering hole remains open.

Four to five people connected to the Dec. 22 fracas need to be identified, police said. NYPD on Tuesday released additional video from the incident, along with a call for the public's help.

The fight served as an unfortunate coda for Woodland, a bustling spot at 242 Flatbush Ave. well-known and much-beloved for its "black brunch." But despite its popularity the bar ran afoul of neighbors whose years of complaints of public drunkenness fueled a successful push to cancel the establishment's liquor license.

Liquor officials' Dec. 18 vote to pull the license took effect on Jan. 3, which gave the bar and its supporters — who claimed racist attitudes unfairly focused attention on the spot — a few last weeks before the owner followed through on his promise to close if he couldn't retain his profitable license.

Four days after the vote an argument broke out inside Woodland, police said. It escalated to the point a group of people punched and kicked a man before the melee moved outside. A video previously released by police showed the man on the ground as he's pummeled.

At some point one of his attackers slashed his torso and elbow, police said.

The man received 15 stitches for his wounds, police said.
