Park Slope's Coronavirus Deaths Among City's Lowest, Data Shows

Two zip codes covering Park Slope had a combined 109 coronavirus deaths — in the far bottom rung of neighborhoods in Brooklyn and citywide.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — Long-awaited data showing the new coronavirus' death tolls by zip code proved bad news for neighborhood after neighborhood in New York City.

But not for Park Slope — at least relatively.

The trendy, open-minded, often-mocked, sometimes-hated Brooklyn neighborhood had 109 deaths as of Tuesday, according to city data.

That number comes from the two zip codes covering Park Slope:

  • 11215 zip code — 40 deaths
  • 11217 zip code — 69 deaths

Only three zip codes in Brooklyn had fewer coronavirus deaths than 11215, the data shows. Likewise, 11217 only had six zip codes in the borough with fewer deaths.

Those ranks change when Park Slope is compared to zip codes citywide. Some 50-odd zip codes covering largely affluent areas like Chelsea, Greenwich Village and the Upper West Side have lower coronavirus deaths than the Slope, according to the data.

But Park Slope shows yet again what is tragically true about the virus — it has largely impacted lower-income areas and communities of color.

"The data also show that this virus is not hitting New Yorkers equitably," said Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot on Monday. "That reality is guiding the COVID-19 response."

Black and brown people citywide had a coronavirus death rate of about 200 per 100,000 people, the data shows.

White death rates stood at 102.04 per 100,000 people.

The death rates in Park Slope stood at 57 deaths and 145 deaths per 100,000 people in its respective zip codes.

Its 11215 zip code, which had the lower death rate, is 67 percent white, according to the U.S. Census. The typical yearly income is about $124,000.

The 11217 zip code is 51 percent white, with a $100,000 annual income, Census data states.
