Raphael McGregor, one of New York’s most in-demand and well-respected steel players, will be playing music to forget yourself by every third Thursday at Freddy’s Bar in Park Slope, from 8 to 9:30 p.m., beginning May 15th. Using a lap steel, vocals, and a loop pedal, both in solo settings and with bass and drums, Raphael McGregor will be playing both repurposed standards and original compositions. Come prepared to hear songs of gentle mystery and deep beauty, songs of swagger and sway, songs to mellow you out, and songs to open new windows in body, mind, and soul – for free!

Since moving to Brooklyn in 2002, Raphael McGregor has performed and recorded with many renowned musicians, most notably Willie Nelson, Darol Anger and Michael Manring, Adam Levy, Emmy award winning composer Paul Brill, Alan Harris, Noam Pikelny, Matt Munisteri, Cyro Baptista, and Chas Justus and the Red Stick Ramblers. For eight years, Raphael was the guitarist and steel player for the Brazilian fusion powerhouse group Nation Beat, which toured all over North America and Brazil, including performances at Farm Aid, Montreal Jazzfest, Porto Musical in Recife, Brazil, Stern Grove, the Hollywood Palladium, Globalfest, and New York’s Blue Note. In 2013, he made his debut as band leader with Fretless, an eight-track record of all original material that broke boundaries for the lap steel.
