Brookhaven Town Delivers Over 9K Meals To Senior Citizens

TOWN OF BROOKHAVEN, NY — In the two months since the coronavirus pandemic hit, the Town of Brookhaven has delivered over 9,100 nutritious meals to senior citizen residents through its enhanced Senior Nutrition Program. The meals were delivered in addition to the Senior Division’s regular Home-Delivered Meal program, which provides a daily meal to isolated senior citizens who are unable to attend the congregate program.

Following Supervisor Ed Romaine’s announcement that all Town senior citizen activities would be suspended to protect the most vulnerable population, the Congregate Meal Program was immediately changed into a home-delivered meal program. Now, any senior who previously received their meals at one of the senior centers, got the daily meals delivered to their homes by town employees.

In order to help those in need, Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, Jr. reassigned Deputy Sheriffs to Brookhaven Town Hall to assist the Town staff with the deliveries, which now exceeds 450 deliveries, five days a week.

"As we continue to cope with this pandemic, I want to thank everyone who has risen to the challenge of meeting the needs of our senior population. This is a group effort and we certainly have an excellent team," Supervisor Ed Romaine said.

Funding for this program is provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, through the New York State Office for the Aging.
