College Sports Notebook: SJC Takes Home Two Championships
Highlights of the top happenings for St. Joseph's and Briarcliffe sports.

St. Joseph's College had an impressive sports week. The Golden Eagles won Skyline Conference titles in both men's and women's cross country.
Three of the top-six women in the 5,000-meter course at Van Cortlandt Park were SJC athletes, including the first place winner, freshman Gillian Goodwin with a time of 20:49:3. This marked the seventh title the women's team has won.
Not to be outdone, the men's team also captured their second title in the past three years.

Although Farmingdale State's Sean Tiernan took home the first-place honors, the Golden Eagles' strong core scored them the championship on the 8,000-meter course.
Depth proved to be the difference. Maritime and Farmingdale each had three runners finish in the top 10, but St. Joseph's placed all five scorers in the top 12, according to the school.

Evan Haun (28:08:7) finished third for SJC and took home the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year award. Other athletes earning points for SJC were: Mike Merolle (5th; 28:32.7), Eric Haun (7th; 28:47.6), Mike Buscemi (10th; 29:09.4) and Mike Lombardi (12th; 29:17.30).
Men's soccer still rolling
The men's soccer team advanced to the semifinals this past Saturday, when it defeated Sage College, 5-2, in Albany.
The usual suspects peppered the scoreboard for the Golden Eagles, as John Dettori scored a hat-trick and Stephan Zaech scored a goal and two assists. With the three goals, Dettori has a team-best 17 tallies this season.
Zaech, Dettori and the boys will travel to Throggs Neck to take on Maritime in the semifinals on Wednesday.
SJC lost a thrilling, double-overtime match to Maritime. The game, which was stuck at a 2-2 deadlock through the two extra sessions, was decided by penalty kicks, in which Maritime bested SJC, 4-2.
Briarcliffe in National Championship
No. 3 Briarcliffe men's soccer team will kick off the 2010 USCAA National Championship against No. 6 Southern State Community College in the quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m., at Tree Farm field in Burlington, Vermont.
