We are the Affiliated Brookhaven Civic Organizations, the Medford Taxpayers and Civic Association, the Brookhaven Town Conservative Committee and many individual residents and concerned citizens waging a fight to preserve the quality of life in our hamlet of Medford.  We’ve already spent thousands of dollars in our battle to stop this casino.  We need YOUR HELP to continue.  We are suing Suffolk Off Track Betting (OTB) to stop them from ignoring the state’s licensing laws and the zoning code of Brookhaven Town, which prohibits a casino at the site of the old Medford Movie Theater.

OTB is flagrantly violating the law and nothing is being done to stop them.

How can they get away with this?  This is due to the dysfunction in the legal system.  They can do what they want until they get challenged.  They are rolling the dice and hope nobody challenges them.  With the Town standing on the sideline, it is easy to see why they think they can succeed.

A Few Points to Remember:

• While believing they are above the law, and for the sake of political patronage, OTB is planning to put a VLT Casino in the middle of our neighborhood.  Even though the law says they must comply with “all local ordinances”, including zoning, OTB refuses.
• OTB sees the 150 homes directly to the west of the property as collateral damage, with no regard to their quality of life.
• The Suffolk County Planning Commission, at their January 7, 2015 meeting, said about this facility that they have “concerns related to gambling establishments such as the increase in assaults, motor vehicle theft, prostitution and sex offenses, drug violations, DUI, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct, etc.”
• OTB refused to address any issues arising from increased crime or traffic in the neighborhoods and roadways surrounding this deplorable venture.
• OTB will not address environmental concerns and in fact will be installing cesspools within 12 feet of our groundwater.
• There will be no revenue to the Town, School District, or Fire Department, in fact with the decline in the value of our homes and the need for additional services by the bankrupt OTB, our taxes will go up.
