- “Leo has been a volunteer in the Patchogue-Medford community since we moved here in 2007. He started out spending countless hours managing and running lots of activities with Cub Scout Pack 543 as a den leader, Assistant Cubmaster, and Cubmaster. The pack’s chartered organization was the Moose Family Fraternity Patchogue Lodge 518, and Leo became a member there, as well. Since joining there in 2008, he has served as Governor, Junior Past Governor, Administrator, Community Service Chairman, and Chartered Organization Representative. He wears many hats on any given day. Not only has he helped the Moose organization with their work at their orphanage and school in Illinois, Mooseheart, and their senior home in Florida, Moosehaven; he has assisted them on the local level with training, and closer to home he has helped the Patchogue-Medford community in many ways. Leo runs many community clean-ups and beautification projects both at the lodge and within our school district, facilitates Scout and Moose participation in Memorial Day activities such as the parade and flag placement at Calverton National Cemetery, hosts an annual veterans breakfast at the lodge to honor local heroes, runs countless fundraisers and has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the benefit of local non-profit organizations and our community’s youth sports teams, and is currently working on a plan to renovate and remodel the lodge (which they need funds and volunteers for if anyone is interested). Additionally, Leo is a member of and has volunteered with his union, NATCA, with many different projects over the course of his 20+ years as an air traffic controller.
Why do you feel this person is an Everyday Hero?
- “Leo is an everyday hero because, in addition to all of the aforementioned volunteer work and his regular work as an air traffic controller, he remains a loving and loyal husband and father. We have three very talented, busy children that continually have activities going on including dance competitions, Scout meetings, karate, AFJROTC, etc. He finds a way to be there to support the kids, despite his busy work schedule. He also thanks me, his wife, on a daily basis for keeping the house running and doesn’t forget that sometimes a date night or vacation or weekend getaway is in order to make sure that we get as much quality time as he devotes to everything else in his life. He is my Everyday Hero, and I couldn’t imagine life without him.”
