Police Issue 57 Summonses at Motorcycle Safety Checkpoint

A North Babylon man whose license has been suspended 17 times was arrested at a motorcycle safety checkpoint Sunday on the Long Island Expressway, police said.

Robert Russo, 43, is charged with second degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Russo was also issued summonses for improper U-turn and pedestrian walking on the highway after he tried to avoid the checkpoint and several other safety violations.

Highway Patrol officers stopped 134 motorcycles between 11:05 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. as they passed through the checkpoint, located between exits 65 and 66 on the LIE in Yaphank, and a total of 57 summonses were issued for the following safety violations:

• 8 Unlicensed Operator
• 17 Uninspected Motorcycle
• 4 Uninsured Motorcycle
• 1 Unregistered Motorcycle
• 13 Modified/Loud Exhaust System
• 1 License Plate Improperly Displayed
• 6 Helmet Not Approved by Department of Transportation
• 4 Driving between marked lanes
• 1 Disobeying Signs
