Ronkonkoma Beach Closed To Swimming Due To Bacteria Levels

The bacteria was in excess of acceptable criteria, Suffolk Department of Health Services officials said Wednesday evening.

RONKONKOMA, NY — The Town of Islip’s Ronkonkoma Beach is closed to bathing bacteria at because bacteria levels are in excess of acceptable criteria, Suffolk County Department of Health Services officials said Wednesday evening.

Bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, according to Suffolk's Commissioner of Health, Dr. Gregson Pigott.

Beaches will reopen when further testing finds the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.

The beach is one of about 13 closed to swimmers earlier this week.

  • Nathan Hale Beach Club in Huntington
  • Crab Meadow in Northport
  • Sound Beach Property Owners’ Association Beach
  • Knollwood Beach
  • Huntington Beach Community Association Beach
  • Valley Grove Beach in Eatons Neck
  • Sayville Marina Park Beach
  • Tanner Park Beach in Copiague
  • Venetian Shores Beach in Lindenhurst
  • Baycrest Association Beach
  • Wincoma Beach in Huntington
  • Fiddlers Green Association Beach in Lloyd Neck

Other beaches that were closed and reopened include Benjamin Beach, Ronkonkoma Beach, Terraces on the Sound Beach in Rocky Point; Fleets Cove Beach in Huntington; Steers Beach and Asharoken Beach in Northport; and Hobart Beach and Prices Bend Beach in Eatons Neck.
