Suffolk Coronavirus: 7 p.m. Siren Tribute To Health Care Workers

Walk outside and listen, County Executive Steve Bellone recommended.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Walk out on your front porch Sunday evening, suggests County Executive Steve Bellone.

Sirens will sound out from fire departments and ambulance corps across Suffolk County at 7 p.m. Sunday. It's a tribute to the health care workers in the county who are risking themselves and their families to care for the victims of the new coronavirus.

In his Sunday news briefing, Bellone said he thought it was apt that the first responders, who also are risking themselves during the outbreak, wanted to honor the county's health care workers.

"These are people working shift after shift after shift in the medical equivalent of a war zone," Bellone said. "It's inspiring."

He said the tribute was particularly poignant given the news late last week of the death of a nurse at Huntington Hospital from COVID-19. Hospital officials confirmed the death of John Abruzzo, 62, on Friday.
