Suffolk Care Collaborative Staff Certified as Mental Health First Aid Responders
Non-professionals and professionals alike learn how to help people experiencing mental health distress
Congratulations to the care managers and support staff at the Stony Brook Suffolk Care Collaborative on becoming certified as Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) responders following a full-day training provided by staff at the Association for Mental Health and Wellness.
MHFA is an in-person training that teaches non-professionals and professionals alike how to help people experiencing mental health distress -- just as CPR helps to assist an individual having a heart attack. In the MHFA course, participants learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. For care managers, MHFA means being able to help people see mental health factors that may been hindering their recovery from serious medical issues, as well as helping people who live with psychiatric disabilities and/or addiction.
