UPDATE: Sunrise Highway Exit 57 Reopened After Fuel Spill

Suffolk police and the local fire department responded to the call at about 11 a.m.

UPDATE 1:19 p.m.: The roadway has been reopened.

YAPHANK, NY — The exit from westbound Sunrise Highway is blocked at Exit 57 and eastbound Horseblock Road is also closed at Yaphank Avenue in Yaphank, Suffolk police said Friday.

Horseblock Road is also closed at Forrest Avenue, according to police.

Officers from the 5th Precinct, as well as the Motor Carrier Safe-T Section, and the local fire department responded to a call about the spill at about 11 a.m., police said.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation's staff noted about four gallons of power-steering fluid dripped onto the roadway while a sanitation vehicle left Sunrise Highway on to Horseblock Road, officials said.

An initial report listed the spill as about 100 gallons.

The fluid leaked due to a break in the power steering line and the area was treated using speedy dry and the roadway has been cleaned and reopened, according to officials.

No significant environmental impacts were noted and the cleanup required by DEC is complete, officials said.
