PATCHOGUE, NY — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began surveying several south shore neighborhoods in Brookhaven Town on Thursday as part of the Fire Island to Montauk Point Reformulation Study.

The work began in the western portion of town and includes ground inspections to confirm inventory of homes identified for voluntary elevations and flood-proofing, according to U.S. Army Corps' Public Affairs Specialist James D'Ambrosino. Surveyors "will move on shortly" to the Mastic-Shirley area where the majority of homes in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been previously identified, D'Ambrosino said.

The surveys are similar to the property assessments that local and county governments conduct periodically, and will include the collection of information such as building types and the number of steps to the entrance, he said.
