Walmart In Yaphank Temporarily Shuttered, Then Reopened After Fire Suppression System Malfunction: Town

YAPHANK, NY — Neighbors in the surrounding area near Walmart in Yaphank took to social media last night after they noticed it had been shuttered.

Some posting, "What's going on at Walmart?"

The store was closed Wednesday night after fire departments were called to the scene, and smoke was seen in a "pump room, according to Brookhaven Town spokesman Drew Scott.

Chief Fire Marshal Chris Mehrman ordered the store closed after discovering that the fire suppression system wasn’t functioning, and technicians were called in to make emergency repairs, Scott said.

Island 16: Cinema de Lux in Holtsville was temporarily closed last week for a similar issue.

In a statement, Mehrman said that there was a fire pump technician at Walmart on Wednesday night, and "immediate repairs were made, and initial testing was completed."

The store's documentation indicates that the pump is operational, according to Mehrman.

"We are satisfied with that at this time and have given Walmart permission to reopen," he said, adding that more repairs is needed and testing is required, "which will be conducted by the technician over the next few days."

"My office will closely monitor the situation," he said. "We are investigating the cause of the malfunction.”

A store representative said it opened at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday.

It is not clear if any other violations could be issued to Walmart.
