WATCH: Suffolk Police Stop Runaway Boat After Pilot Fell In Water
The pilot was knocked in the water when he was hit by the wake of a passing vessel, and rescued by a good Samaritan, police say.
BELLPORT, NY — Suffolk County police stopped a runaway boat in Bellport Bay earlier today after its pilot fell into the water.
According to the Suffolk County Police, a Medford man was piloting his 39-foot Contender boat in the Bellport Bay when he tried to navigate a turn, was hit by a wake from a passing vessel and was knocked into the water.
The boater treaded water for 15 minutes before he was rescued by Matthew Honce, another boater who was passing by.

Suffolk County Marine Bureau Officers MIchael Cappiello, Brian Flatley and Shane Parker responded to the scene and found the runaway boat. The officers maneuvered their boat next to it, and Parker climbed aboard and shut off the engines.
The boater who was knocked into the water was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries.
