Winners of Battle On The Bay Announced

Awards take place at ceremony in Patchogue shortly after races end.

The first-place finishers of Battle On The Bay were announced at an awards ceremony held at Lombardi's on the Bay in Patchogue just after races finished Sunday.

First-place winners from each class included: Miss Geico, Turbine Extreme; Talkn Trash, Super Cat; Amsoil, Cat Lite; Lightning Jack, class 1; Wazzup, Super Vee; TKO, class 3; Chiro One, class 4; Specialized, class 5; and Wazzup II, class 6. There were no competitors for class 2.

Thirty-eight boats competed in nine different classes. Winners were calculated using GPS technology that picks out the top speed, according to the event's organizer Louie Giancontieri.

Classes were based on boat speed or weight and power. Class six could race at no faster than 70 miles per hour (mph); class 5, 75 mph; class 4, 85 mph; class 3, 95 mph; and class 1, 115 mph.

Despite inclement weather, some competitors found keeping within the speed limit to be the most difficult part of the race.

"The weather wasn't bad, our boats are made to run in rough water. The hard part was to keep it under the speed limit," said Ernie Dupuis, throttler for the boat Nopper Marine. Dupuis' boat is a Sutphen, which users say is known for working well in inclement weather.

Though Giancontieri said there weren't many mishaps during the battle, he did have a blunder on his boat. The bolster broke loose and he was thrown to the floor of Strictly Business, which finished third in the Super Vee class.
