How Many Homeless Veterans Need a Home Right Now ?

What the Rockland Homes For Heroes is try to do to end veteran homelessness.

Please know that the "Rockland Homes For Heroes" Charity Supportive Apartments Program on Western Highway in Tappan could legally serve any Honorably Discharged Veteran from any place in America.

However, we are striving very hard to add just 14 more Apartments to our current very successful 8 apartments to serve the Veterans served by the Veterans Administration Hudson Valley Care System which is headquartered in Montrose. We think having only 22 apartments on our 7 acres will maintain its park-like feeling.

At the last "Point In Time" search there were 56 very homeless Veterans who meet the federal govrlegal criteria of homeless right now. Males constitute 94% and females 6% of the total. 11% are under 40 years old, 65% are between 41 & 65, 23 % are over 65 years old.It is a fact that every very homeless Veteran was not found for many reasons and homeless in this case are not Veterans looking for more affordable housing or better housing. It's about Veterans with no place to live for a host of compelling reasons.

Our Apartments are intended to be affordable permanent homes with rent subsidies and Case Management in a lovely campus/neighborhood with a bus stop on sacred military land, “Last Stop USA” Camp Shanks, which we hope will be a "Living Memorial”.

The cost of constructing 14 more Apartments will be $4,000,000 which will most likely come from the New York State Homeless & Assistance Program, but we must raise and contribute about $500,000, which we are doing. We have alrteady raised over $350,000 and we will continue to raise the needed balance. We believe the government funding and start of construction will be determined by the State’s handling of the Pandemic in the next 12 months.

We can not fix our nation's homeless problem, but we can make a difference in the lives of our homeless Veterans who are our neighbors.
