Lawmaker Wants Extra Alerts from Indian Point
Social media, text messages and robo-calls would add punch to the nuclear power plant's emergency notification system.

The Rockland County Legislature approved a resolution sponsored by Legislator Lon M. Hofstein (R - New City) calling on federal authorities to make Entergy develop a new notification system for residents in the event of an emergency at the Indian Point power plant.
Federal law requires counties within 10 miles of a nuclear plant to develop emergency plans for residents. Currently, the power plant uses sirens.
“A siren warning system is 20th Century technology that is wholly inadequate and antiquated in the 21st Century,” Hofstein said in a prepared statement. “The recent transformer fire is another example of why we need a modern system in place. The notification system we are proposing is basic for 2015, and is needed immediately given the incredible threat the plant poses to Rockland residents.”

Hofstein believes that in the event of an emergency, a notification system would provide residents with much needed time to evacuate and save countless more lives.

The legislative resolution requests that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission require the plant operators to establish a system to notify residents of any emergency at the plant by e-mail, text message, and automated phone calls.
The system would also be established at the expense of Entergy—and not taxpayers, Hofstein said.
