Pearl River Middle School Earns National Honor
Pearl River Middle School was named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Thursday.
The U.S. Department of Education named Pearl River Middle School a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Thursday.
Pearl River Middle School is one of 256 public schools honored with the award this year, the only one in Rockland County. There are also 49 private schools recognized nationwide.
"I am extremely proud of our staff and our students," said PRMS Principal Maria Paese. "They work very hard and this is perfect testimony to their efforts."

The award recognizes schools either for overall academic performance or for closing achievement gaps. The New York State Education Department nominated PRMS because it placed among the top 10 percent of New York State schools on state standardized tests.
School officials then filled out an application including the school's curriculum and instructional strategies.

"We are extremely fortunate to have a dedicated and talented faculty and motivated students," said Pearl River Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Morgano. "Over the past two decades, PRSD has maintained a steady focus on teaching and learning with the goal of preparing every student for success. Being recognized by our national education leaders affirms that focus."
Paese and one teacher from the school will go to Washington, D.C. in November to receive the Blue Ribbon plaque. The school will also be holding a celebration, with details to be determined.
Franklin Avenue Elementary School, also in the PRSD, was recognized as a Blue Ribbon school in 2008.
