Rockland Activists To Rally For Democracy Reform Thursday
The "Whose House? Our House!" rally is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at the county courthouse in New City.

NEW CITY, NY — Political activists will demonstrate at the Rockland County Courthouse Thursday. It is part of a "national day of action" by the Indivisible movement. The local demonstration is sponsored by Rockland United, Rockland CAN, and Women of Action-NY.
“We worked hard to make this Democratic majority happen in the House,” Ivanya Alpert of Piermont said in a press release. “Now it’s time for Democrats in Congress to deliver by passing a strong democracy bill which includes measures to empower voters, get money out of politics, and take on corruption.”
At the courthouse, they said they would call for Rep. Nita Lowey’s strong support of the democracy reform bill that Democrats are expected to introduce that day (H.R. 1), as well as support for the Green New Deal and common sense gun control measures.

“I am paying attention to politics in a way I’ve never done before,” said Samantha Buell of New City. “My kids and I wrote hundreds of postcards to voters about issues that matter to our family. Now that the elections are over, I expect our representatives to fight for us by working hard to pass not just HR1 and democracy reform, but also a Green New Deal and common sense gun legislation. I am rallying to make sure that Nita Lowey and reps across the country know that we will be watching closely to make sure they follow through on their campaign promises.”
In 2018, members of Rockland United, Rockland Citizens Action Network and Women of Action-NY worked alongside issue-based advocacy organizations, unions and other grassroots community groups to register voters, recruit candidates for office, and actively campaign for Democratic candidates. They said they supported Lowey, Antonio Delgado, and James Skoufis among others.

“All of us are sick of big money corruption, sick of the voter disenfranchisement in Georgia and here at home, sick of the politicians who loosen regulations that keep our kids safe so that their donors can make a bigger profit. This is OUR country. This is OUR House of Representatives. I want a democratic government that represents us regular people,” said Michael Lockett of Nyack. “H.R. 1 is an important first step in taking back our country and our government from the corporations and the lobbyists.”
