7PM Vigil Tonight at Mount Olivet Church

The Peekskill congregation is thinking about the gift of life at Christmas and the shrine outside to a young man shot down Sunday.

Mount Olivet Church says:

Across our US homeland, around the globe and within our hometowns we have witnessed in 2015 a year marked with joys and concerns; seasons of thanksgiving, struggles, seemingly small miracles and epic in proportion. Within our community of faith at Mt Olivet Baptist Church (MOBC) we joyously celebrate the birth of Jesus the Christ— therefore if one considers the gift of life itself to be a miracle, then perhaps one of the greatest tragedies is the very loss of life. With that in mind we only have to look outside the church sanctuary windows, at 1431 Park Street to view the small shrine of candles, which symbolizes the end of life for a 22 year Peekskill resident named Stephen Agosto. While I may not know the young man or his family I do know that life is precious.

Perhaps this senseless tragedy could have occurred anywhere at any time in Peekskill but it happened on our block , on a Sunday night where we work, live, play and worship. Even more so in the face of global threats and chronic acts of senseless violence, as a congregation we remain sensitive and do not take life for granted. Our prayers are with the Agosto family and that through our law enforcement community, that justice will be served.

Today at MOBC we are having a prayer vigil at noon and at 7 pm, it’s especially a somber, poignant moment of prayer because of this tragedy among others. As Christians we uphold the belief that we are our brothers and sisters keeper, therefore as human beings we recognize that all lives matter. In these few remaining days of 2015 let us not get caught up in the hustle and bustle of gift giving, potlucks and the stress of shopping for friends and loved ones that we lose the meaning behind the greatest gift, that being the gift of life.
