Today's riddle: Why do fish live in salt water? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Hudson Valley H20 Runs Aground (peekskillherald.com) — Residents who loved renting kayaks and paddleboards at the Peekskill waterfront just lost Hudson Valley H2O, which has ceased operations after struggling with storage and city support. Founder Ian Berger criticizes the lack of waterfront infrastructure and notes the city hasn't installed the north landing kayak launch for 2026, even as nearby river towns expand boating access and programs.
2. Guilty plea for ex-NYPD Sgt. in drunken crash that killed Peekskill man (lohud.com) — A former NYPD sergeant has pleaded guilty in Westchester County Court to charges stemming from a drunk, wrong-way Taconic State Parkway crash that killed a Peekskill resident driving home from work. The judge has promised a 4-to-12-year prison term, a sentence the victim's family says feels too light given their ongoing grief and loss.
3. Saugerties Village Board backs Riverkeeper grant application for Lower Esopus study (dailyfreeman.com) — A new Riverkeeper-backed study of pollution in the Lower Esopus Creek will be modeled on the group's earlier Hollow Brook project in Peekskill, which helped protect that city's drinking water. The study aims to pinpoint phosphorus and septic pollution so Hudson Valley communities can secure funding for sewer upgrades, stormwater fixes, and farm best practices that ultimately affect downstream water quality.
4. Col. Rogers' ancestor had Revolutionary War service, Museum learns (thepetersburgobserver.com) — Peekskill makes a cameo in newly uncovered research on Revolutionary War soldier Joseph Rogers, whose Connecticut regiment was stationed in the Peekskill area while guarding against British movements. The article traces his service from Boston to New York, Valley Forge, and finally Fishkill, highlighting how this region figured into his final years tending the sick before his death in 1779.
