Children's Theatre Co., Peekskill Presents Henry Box Brown, A Story of Courage And The Triumph of The Human Spirit!

Theatre, Black History Month, Children's Theatre, Community, Youth, Peekskill, Westchester

Each year, as February approaches, the Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) of Peekskill prepares to showcase a musical production.

The Children’s Theatre Company is a deeply socially minded, non-profit organization, that works to better our community by utilizing the magical art of theatre to instill within our youth a strong sense of character, a keen sense of global citizenship and unity, and the courage to challenge the injustice in the world. We are not a typical theatre company, for we use theatre as a tool for critical and analytic thinking, and to instill in our youth that they can be the voice of positive change in the world.

In light of Black History Month, in the spirit of celebrating silenced voices in history, and in the current political climate, we will be showcasing a musical rendition of Henry Box Brown’s life, a story of courage, strength, creativity, and a daring escape from slavery. The musical features Gospel, R&B, bluegrass and African American spirituals with an infusion of American folk music. In the process, the children have gained a personal connection to integral aspects of black history and identity, honed their ability to empathize with the struggles of the oppressed, and discussed the implications of historic oppression in modern day American society.
