Colonial Fair on June 5th from 1-4
Experience class in a one room schoolhouse, weaving, militia training and outdoor cooking.

The Van Cortlandtville Historical Society is hosting an exciting Colonial Fair for visitors to experience historic schooling, cooking, weaving and military tradition of that era on Sunday, June 5th, from 1 to 4 p.m. at The Little Red Schoolhouse, 297 Locust Avenue, Cortlandt Manor, NewYork. The event is for all age groups and opens free to the public. “Come one, come all to our treasured one-room schoolhouse---located alongside one of the oldest restored Houses of Worship in Westchester. Take a pause to step back in time and savor the history,” says retired teacher Mary Foley of Cortlandt Manor, the project coordinator for the event and a member of the Society’s Board of Directors. “Join us for an enjoyable, enriching and enlightening experience,” she urges. The afternoon will feature 2 sessions of classes in the authentic setting of the schoolhouse and taught by retired principal Frank Goncalves of Newburgh. Jack Lancaster of Cortlandt Manor, in the role of George Washington, will give guided tours of Old Saint Peter’s Church (where Washington worshipped) nestled in the adjacent cemetery. Members of the 2nd NY Continental, led by retired U.S. Army Colonel Joe Cerreto of Montrose, will portray Revolutionary-era military traditions, as they seek to enlist a few good men…and women! Beth Olson coming all the way from Canandaigua, NY will demonstrate the art of weaving. Outdoor Colonial Cooking---using vintage utensils and a local catch of fish---will be demonstrated by historian Ted Winser of Newburgh…and he will offer tasty tidbits of his culinary skills. Other light refreshments will also be available in our gathering room. The Little Red Schoolhouse is located at the north end of Locust Avenue, next to Old Saint Peter’s Church and cemetery, on the hill just south of Oregon Road in the Town of Cortlandt.
