Crèches from Around the World Annual Exhibit

Features nativity scenes from many nations

In celebration of Christ's birth, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement are exhibiting an international collection of crèches in the Graymoor Spiritual Life Center from November 21st until January 12, 2017. The event is suitable for young and old and is open to the public, free of charge.

“The crèche is a Franciscan tradition,” said Father Thomas Orians, SA, Director of Graymoor Spiritual Life Center.

“St Francis of Assisi in 1223 first created a crèche scene in the village of Greccio, Italy. St. Francis wanted people to remember that Jesus was born in a humble stable. Today it has become a humble, simple representation of the true meaning of Christmas.”

Graymoor’s annual Christmas tradition started with a collection of crèches by the late Father Joseph P. Egan, SA.

On display are stunning hand-made and mass-produced crèches from almost every continent and country. The crèches are constructed of materials as diverse as straw, wood, ceramic, stone, paper—even elk horn. The display is located in the Center's fifth floor hallway and in the Library, and is best viewed during daylight hours.
