The magic of Disney will be coming to the Peekskill Middle School Theater on Friday, February 2 and Saturday, February 3 when the school’s Drama Club presents, “The Lion King, Jr."

The show’s cast and crew consists of approximately 40 PKMS students, and is led by Peekskill City School District Performing Arts Teachers Cynthia Reynolds, (Director), Alison Kramer (Music Director), Katrina Lester (Choreography, Sets, Masks) and Yolanda Guardino (Peekskill Middle School Drama Assistant).

The 60-minute musical, designed for middle-school aged performers, is based on the Broadway production directed by Julie Taymor and the 1994 Disney film. “The Lion King, Jr.” tells the story of the epic adventures of a curious cub named Simba as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destiny as king. Along the way, the young lion encounters a colorful cast of characters including spunky lioness Nala, charismatic meerkat Timon, and loveable warthog Pumbaa. To claim his rightful place on the throne and save his beloved pride lands, Simba must find his inner strength and confront his wicked Uncle Scar.

“Working on, “The Lion King, Jr.” has been a great experience for our diverse population of performers, who have been learning to sing in African languages as well as researching African culture,” said Reynolds.

Students are enjoying the process of rehearsing for the production, and are excited to showcase their talents in the upcoming show.

PKMS student Gabriel Berger, who plays the villainous Scar says he liked having the opportunity to transform into the character during rehearsals.

“I like playing Scar because being an evil character is fun,” Berger said. “I’m not obliged to be good, and I can let a side out of me that I couldn’t if I was playing a good guy.”
