Election 2017: Westchester Primaries Focus on Democratic, 3rd Parties

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — Democrats and third-party candidates are battling it out Tuesday, Sept. 12's primary to see who will be on the ballot in November. There are county executive and legislature races, as well as common and town council decisions to make.

Westchester County Executive
There's a Democratic Party Primary as County Legislator Ken Jenkins and State Senator George Latimer are vying for the opportunity to oppose incumbent Republican County Executive Robert Astorino in the general election in November.

Westchester County Legislature
District 2: Kitley S. Covill and Francis T. Corcoran are vying for the Independence Party line in November.
District 9: Incumbent Catherine A. Borgia is being challenged by Robert J. Outhouse in the Independence Party primary.
District 14: Seeking the Independence Party line in November are David J. Tubiolo and Gwen Dean.
District 16: Four people want the Democratic line in the general election: Symra D. Brandon, Nicole A. Benjamin, Christopher A. Johnson and Carmen Gomez-Goldberg.
District 17: There's also a Democratic Primary here, between London Reyes and Virginia M. Perez.
Mount Vernon
Longtime City Comptroller Maureen Walker is challenged in a Democratic Primary by Deborah Reynolds.
Peekskill
Topping the races is the contentious fight for Peekskill Common Council. There are five people vying for three lines on the Democratic ballot in November, and two of them are running on the GOP slate.
The five seeking the Democratic lines:
- Robert M. Sullivan
- Colin D. Smith
- Ramon A. Fernandez
- Luis A. Segarra
- Vanessa B. Agudelo
Segarra and Sullivan are running mates, picked by the Peekskill Republican Committee to run on its "Peekskill United" slate. Their entry into the race, forcing a Democratic Primary, caused fury among city Democrats. It led to the usual intra-party in-fighting following New York State's arcane election laws.
White Plains
In White Plains, there are contested primaries for mayor and the Common Council, both for the Democratic Party.
Milagros Lecuona is challenging incumbent Mayor Thomas M. Roach Jr. for the Democratic primary.
For Common Council, there are three contested Democratic Party lines. Incumbent Councilmen John B. Kirkpatrick and John M. Martin are running against Saad Turab Siddiqui, Justin C. Brasch, Alan D. Goldman and Michael Kraver.
Yorktown
In Yorktown, the Independence Party is where the primary action is. For Yorktown Town Council, there are three people vying to be on the two Independence lines for the general election. Incumbent Councilmen Vishnuai V. Patel and Gregory M. Bernard are seeking the Independence slots as is Alice E. Roker.
Incumbent Supervisor Michael Grace and Ilan D. Gilbert are both seeking to be on the Independence line in the November election.
For Yorktown Town Justice, incumbent Salvatore A. Lagonia is seeking to be on Independence Party line against Aviah J. Cohen Pierson.
