On Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 7 p.m., The Field Library will present “The Oceans, Above and Below,” a lecture and multimedia presentation by Captain Lada Simek, marine educator, wreck researcher, Master Scuba Diver Trainer and Senior Director at Beneath the Sea, the largest non-profit dive exposition in the United States.
Captain Simek will share valuable information learned in his more than fifty years of diving in Long Island Sound and throughout the world. The first part of the presentation will cover breathing and survival under water, the physics of air under pressure, and the equipment needed to go under water. Other topics covered include coral reefs, the biology of fish, and the effectiveness of adaptive camouflage. In addition to seeing photos of the oceans from space and pictures of living creatures thought to be extinct, audience members will have the opportunity to handle rare and invaluable specimens collected two miles deep by Alvin, the first deep-sea submersible capable of carrying passengers.
The Field Library is located at 4 Nelson Avenue in Peekskill, NY. The library is wheelchair-accessible. For further information, please contact Sibyl Canaan, Director, The Field Library, 737-7110.
