The Field Gallery is proud to present Post No Ills, the first solo show of noted New York artist Lance Johnson. Johnson’s distinctive, fiercely vibrant collages are celebrations and reflections. Jazz and hip-hop influences, African American heritage, and the beauty that thrives in urban places combine to create a new form of dynamic cityscape.
Raised in the Golden Age of hip-hop, at the age of 14 Johnson fell in love with art when shown a documentary featuring the important work of collage pioneer Romare Bearden. “I owe a tremendous debt to his vision,” Johnson explains. “I want to serve as an extension of his legacy. Collage became my medium of choice because, like Jazz, it allows for improvisation and the juxtaposition of unlikely parts combined to create familiar images.”
Johnson’s work has been exhibited in many group shows throughout New York as well as Boston, MA and Charleston, SC. He has been featured in The New York Times, on CBS News, Art In New York City, Art in Flux, Artiholics, Harlem Eatup!, The Harlem Arts Festival, and other media outlets and events.
