A new opportunity is open now for Westchester County, Putnam County, and New York City residents who are ready to start a career or make a meaningful career change.
A regional partnership has launched a free clean energy workforce training program that is actively recruiting participants beginning this spring. The program is designed to help residents of state-designated Disadvantaged Communities gain free training and move quickly into in-demand jobs in heating, cooling, and home performance.
Led by The Healthy Home Academy in partnership with Sustainable Westchester and supported by the New York Power Authority, the initiative will train and place more than 120 participants over the next two years. Recruitment and information sessions are already underway.
“This program is about creating real pathways into stable careers,” said Cat Sayles, Chief Operating Officer at Sustainable Westchester. “We’re working closely with community partners to make sure residents know these opportunities are available right now — and that they come with hands-on training, industry credentials, and support to help people succeed.”
Training built for in-demand jobs
Participants can choose from two career pathways aligned with growing workforce needs:
● Heat pump installation training prepares graduates for modern HVAC roles focused on high-efficiency electric heating and cooling systems — one of the fastest-growing areas in the skilled trades.
● Home performance training focuses on improving comfort, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality in existing homes — skills that are increasingly sought by contractors and building professionals.
The intensive five-week program takes place at the Healthy Home Academy in Brewster, NY, and combines classroom instruction, hands-on lab training, and supervised field experience. Participants earn industry-recognized certifications that help them enter the workforce with competitive credentials.
“High-efficiency HVAC and home performance are where the trades are heading,” said Kevin Brenner, Head of The Healthy Home Academy. “This program gives participants practical skills, real job pathways, and the chance to do work that improves people’s lives while building a strong future for themselves.”
Free tuition with built-in career support
There is no cost to participate. Training is fully funded through the program.
The program includes career coaching, resume and interview preparation, and individualized support throughout the job placement process. Graduates are connected to regional employers and receive follow-up support after placement to help ensure long-term career success.
“As more homes and buildings transition to cleaner energy systems, the demand for skilled workers continues to grow,” Sayles added. “This training gives residents the chance to build practical skills and step into careers that are both future-focused and locally needed.”
Residents who are interested — or who know someone looking for a new direction — are encouraged to act soon, as cohorts are forming now.
