Local unemployment rates keep dropping, according to the latest data from the state Labor Department.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Jobless rates are 3.4 percent or lower in the region. That's according to the New York State Labor Department, which on Wednesday released unemployment results for December.

The counties in New York State with the lowest unemployment rates in December 2018 include:

  • Columbia County (2.9 percent)
  • Nassau County (3.0 percent)
  • Tompkins County (3.0 percent)
  • Dutchess County (3.1 percent)
  • Albany County (3.2 percent)
  • Putnam County (3.2 percent)
  • Rockland County (3.2 percent)
  • Saratoga County (3.2 percent)
  • Suffolk County (3.2 percent)

The other counties weren't far behind: Orange County had an unemployment rate in December of 3.3 percent, and Ulster and Westchester posted jobless rates of 3.4 percent.

The region outpaces the state, which had an unemployment rate of 3.9 percent in December.

In December 2018, the number of private sector jobs in the state was 8,243,700, which is a new all-time high.
