Internationally Known Early Childhood Music Program to Be Offered in Peekskill

Music classes for young children to be offered in Peekskill. Music learning supports brain development, scientific study shows.

Peekskill, NY - September 21, 2016 - A recent scientific study by researchers at the Brain and Creativity Institute (BCI) at the University of Southern California shows that “exposure to music and music instruction accelerates the brain development of young children in the areas responsible for language development, sound, reading skill and speech perception.”

That’s not news to Alexia Tate, a recent arrival to Peekskill who is offering Music Together classes at New Era Creative Space this fall.

“The philosophy of Music Together has always included the statement that ‘music learning supports all learning’. As we see more studies about music and early childhood development, it becomes ever more important to get the word out to parents and offer them fun and developmentally appropriate opportunities to experience and experiment with music.”

New Era Creative Space (NECS) has offered Music Together, the international early childhood music and movement program that’s now in its 30th year, in the past, but there have not been any classes since last fall. Tate is joining Susan Cody in bringing the program back for local families of small children.

“Our classes are mixed age, from newborn babies to preschoolers. We adapt our activities so every family can participate, and the children learn a lot from each other, as well as from observing the grown-ups they love having fun making music,” Tate says. “Society has moved away from participating in music-making to consuming music -- pressing a button to hear a few certain people who are ‘allowed’ to make music. Music Together reminds us that we are all allowed to make music. It’s our privilege as humans to do so!”
