Lakeland School Trustee Scoreboard Gig Snafu
Steve Rosen's been running the scoreboard at games for 15 years and a trustee for 10. An unnoticed bylaw has tripped the school board up.
SHRUB OAK, NY — Lakeland school board member Steve Rosen has run the scoreboard at Lakeland athletic events for the past 15 years. It was that gig that brought him to the attention of then-Superintendent Kenneth Connolly, who suggested he run for trustee 10 years ago, he told TapInto Yorktown.
What has now surfaced is that the Lakeland Board of Education has in its bylaws a rule that a trustee cannot earn more than $750 from the district in a given year. The district's records show he was paid almost $3,000 a year between 2009 and 2017.
Though he was not an employee but an outside vendor, the Board of Education is seeking to have Rosen return overpayment. He said his attorney is talking to the district's lawyers, TapInto Yorktown reported.

In accordance with New York State law and recognizing its fiduciary duties, the Board of Education will seek to recover the overpayments made to Board Member Steve Rosen. Following the advice of legal counsel, the Lakeland Audit Committee will undertake a review of internal controls and procedures. Internal controls are reviewed annually by the district's external auditor and have been reviewed in the past by the district's internal auditor. Existing controls will be reviewed this year without waiting for the annual audit.
