PEEKSKILL, NY - Surrounded by family, friends, supporters, fellow elected officials, union presidents and party officials, State Senator Terrence Murphy launched his bid for reelection last night. Focusing on values and work ethic, the Senator from Yorktown made it clear his mission of cleaning up Albany and providing greater opportunity for his neighbors is not yet done.

"I have earned a reputation as a bridge-builder," Murphy told the crowd of nearly 200. "I pride myself on finding common ground to work with anybody - regardless of party - to keep things moving and to get the job done."

Murphy cited his leadership combating the heroin and opioid epidemic as proof of his ability to build consensus on critical issues. He authored and passed a law which is now being looked at as a national model which restricted prescription opioids from 30 days down to seven. "It was common sense," he reflected. "I worked across the aisle with anyone who was willing to help and we got the job done."

His dedication to veterans' issues, holding utility companies accountable and advocating for the communities impacted by the closure of Indian Point have been heralded time and again. In this year's state budget, Murphy secured $24 million to help quell the imminent tax impact because of the plant's impending closure.

Dutchess County Sheriff Butch Anderson described Senator Murphy as a family man. "This gentleman has honor, respect and he's honest," he said. "He has love for all and a love for his office. He's a good man, an honest man and stands up for what is right."

Putnam County Legislator Joe Castellano said, "This is exactly the kind of guy we need representing us in Albany. He's a regular guy, a father, a husband and I'm truly honored to call him a friend. Terrence gets results and I am so proud to have him in Albany representing my family and community."

Mount Pleasant Supervisor Carl Fulgenzi said, "We are blessed to have such a positive force as Terrence Murphy. From day one he embraced the job not just with his mind but with his heart. He's been a constant presence in our town hosting an array of events for our seniors and veterans. When tragedy struck during the Metro North derailment he was right by my side. He's delivered the Hudson Valley's first Center of Excellence to Valhalla's New York Medical College to combat bioterrorism, brought home funds for new Chromebooks for our elementary school, opened a new dental school here at Touro College of Medicine and secured $1 million for the downtown revitalization of Hawthorne. I am proud to stand with the very best man for the job."

As Senator Murphy begins to embark on an issue driven campaign his opponent has yet to be chosen. Rumors late Friday indicated a split between the Democratic Party's establishment leadership and its activists. In 2016, there was a similar fracture which resulted in a Democratic primary and Senator Murphy was ultimately re-elected 58 to 42 in a district that is home to both Hillary Clinton and Governor Andrew Cuomo.
