Peekskill Landing Park Belongs to the City Now

Ownership transferred from Scenic Hudson as planned 18 years ago

The ownership of Scenic Hudson Park at Peekskill Landing has been transferred from Scenic Hudson Land Trust to the City of Peekskill.

That’s been the plan all along, said Peekskill Mayor Frank Catalina in a prepared statement. Back in 1998, the city agreed to a perpetual conservation easement on the property.

Peekskill Landing Park is the first phase of the City’s $8.3 million parkland redevelopment on the Hudson River waterfront, and the park was opened to the public in September 2014. Now, one year later, Scenic Hudson has transferred full ownership of the park to the City of Peekskill at no cost, which in turn has agreed to abide by a Conservation Easement on the property in perpetuity.

This new 4.4 acre park includes a floating dock for non-motorized watercraft, a kayak launch, boardwalk, gazebo, trellis, sculptures, natural paths, footbridge, and other amenities. Construction of the park was a joint venture between the City and Scenic Hudson, a classic example of a successful public-private partnership. Construction funding was secured through grants awarded by Empire State Development, the NYS Department of State, the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, with matching funds coming from the City of Peekskill.

This past year has seen extensive use of the park by the public, with excellent feedback on the design and beauty of the park from all who visit. The park is open every day of the year, and is located over the railroad tracks at Hudson Avenue, just north of Riverfront Green Park in Peekskill.
