PHS Art Students Take Part in "I'm Tired" Project at HVCCA
The student's pieces will be displayed in June alongside Akpan and Evan's, "I'm Tired" art piece at HVCCA.
Peekskill High School art students recently had the opportunity to work with emerging British artist Paula Akpan. Akpan has teamed up with fellow artist Harriet Evans to produce an exhibition entitled, “I’m Tired,” which is currently on display at Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Arts. The “I’m Tired” project focuses on the lasting impact of everyday micro-aggression, assumptions and stereotypes through the personal stories of their subjects.
Upon Akpan’s request, the PHS students agreed to be subjects for the project and were asked what they are "tired of." The students then recorded their answers as written reflection statements. With help from Donna Mikkelson, the Educational Director at Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Arts, and PHS’s art teacher Mrs. Heather Brown, Akpan was able to paint on and photograph the hands of over fifty students, two teachers and one administrator.
These hand photos will be displayed in June alongside Akpan and Evan’s, “I’m Tired” art piece at HVCCA.
