PHS Foreign Language Week Culminates with Food Festival

The week long celebration brought foreign films, culturally inspired dance lessons and a food festival to Peekskill HS students.

The Peekskill High School Foreign Language Department recently celebrated their 11th Annual Foreign Language Week by treating students to a variety of culturally influenced activities.

The week brought foreign films from France and China and invited students to dress in traditional outfits inspired by their heritage. PHS Dance Teacher Mrs. Pacht also offered student the opportunity to learn dances from different cultures.

This year’s most popular event of the weeklong celebration was the Food Festival, which offered over 50 student-prepared dishes from a variety of countries including India, Mexico, Ireland, Vietnam, England, Jamaica and more.

Jennifer Michel, a Spanish and French Teacher at PHS helped organize the event and was excited to have so many students participate in the Foreign Language Week celebrations.

“The week’s most popular events vary from year to year, but this year it was definitely the Food Festival,” Michel said. “The whole week is a great experience for our students. It’s definitely something out of the ordinary that helps get the kids involved and allows them to try things that they don’t normally get to see or do. For example, not many students will go out of their way to watch a foreign film or learn a dance from a different culture, but this week they do.”
