UPDATE: Tug Captain Dies in Tough Conditions on the Hudson River

Marine units and emergency crews responded to a 911 call from both sides of the river Monday night.

A tugboat captain died last night despite efforts from both sides of the Hudson River.

The man was identified as Edward T. Smith, 50, of Norwalk, Conn., the Rockland County Sheriff's Office told The Journal News.

He was the captain of the Pilgrim, a tugboat for Tappan Zee Constructors, the company building the new bridge over the Tappan Zee, TJN reported.

The captain of a tugboat went into cardiac arrest, according to Orange and Rockland Fire.

The boat went aground near Haverstraw.

Marine units deployed and EMS units were standing by on both sides of the river. According to Rockland Fires the person was brought ashore at the Tilcon Plant in Haverstraw.
