YORKTOWN, NY — Lakeland school district officials will begin counting the returns in this year's absentee-ballot-only budget and school board vote after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Return mailing envelopes will be opened by the District Clerk and the sealed ballot envelope will be examined to ensure that it has been signed by the voter, as required by law.

The names on the envelopes will be checked to be sure they are on the Westchester County or Putnam County Registered Voter List and signatures will be matched.

Any invalid Oath Envelopes will be separated from those that will be counted.

Beginning at 5 p.m., ballots will be opened and withdrawn from their signed ballot envelopes and placed, still folded, into a receptacle separate from the signed ballot envelopes. It will not be possible for ballots to be linked to or associated with the envelopes in which they were returned.

After all of the ballots have been separated from their envelopes, election inspectors will collect the anonymous ballots from the receptacle and the counting process will begin.

The opening of the ballots and counting process, which will take place at the Administration Building, will be livestreamed and viewable by the public to the extent possible.

The results will be posted once they have completed the count, and a short Board meeting to certify the results will be held Thursday.
