The Enlightenment era was yielding to a new century shaped by Romanticism, emotional expression, industrialization, and new forms of political conflict.
The Enlightenment did not solve every human contradiction, nor did it cure the young nation of its founding flaws. But it did give the revolutionary generation a language, a method, and a character:
