August Seminar Gets Math Teachers Ready for School Year

On Aug. 20, in Port Chester, New York, Marshall Cavendish Education, the original textbook publisher of the world class Singapore Math® approach, will host a full-day professional development seminar for math teachers of, grades K-7 titled Singapore Math®: Advancing the Next Generation of Problem Solvers.

Dr. Richard Bisk, who is professor of Mathematics at Worcester State University and has worked extensively with K-12 teachers and students for the past 25 years, will be leading this one-day event. He will work with educators to emphasize concrete-pictorial-abstract (CPA) teaching strategies, which is core to the Singapore Math® method, In addition, Dr. Bisk will demonstrate how using visual manipulatives can successfully hone essential problem-solving skills in students.

Singapore Math® is a way of teaching math developed by Marshall Cavendish Education and adopted by the Singapore Ministry of Education nearly 30 years ago.. Its practical, hands-on teaching approach ensures that mathematical concepts are taught in ways that students naturally learn – through drawing, using visual aids and manipulatives, group collaboration and discussion. The Singapore Math Approach of teaching to mastery that emphasizes understanding over memorization. Students at all levels of achievement learn to understand what the problem is, how to solve it using different strategies and how to apply that concept to more challenging problems.

The seminar will also share with educators strategies for instilling perseverance and confidence in their students.
