Fifth graders start DARE classes to learn how to resist drugs and violence

COLONIAL SCHOOL — DARE classes began on Dec. 5 to teach fifth-grade kids to resist drugs and violence.
DARE stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Another set of words that spells DARE tells what to do in a bad situation: Define Assess Respond Evaluate.

Pelham Police Officer Brian Hendrie came in to all the fifth grade classrooms, and each student received a planner to fill out work they do in DARE class.
The mascot of the DARE program is a lion named Daren. Officer Hendrie said that the student who answers correctly a question he will ask in each class will get to hold Daren until the end of the class.

DARE will continue until the end of the year. But until then, and after this year, and for the rest of your life: Everyone should stay out of trouble.
