Construction Craft Laborers, Stationary Engineers, Metal Refinishers Looking for Apprentices

PELHAM, NY — If you are looking to get started in a trade, there are three recruiting programs going on now for apprentices for construction craft laborers, stationary engineers and metal refinishers. Just be warned — one apprentice recruitment is ending soon.
Two unions are doing hiring as is one trade institute. And one of the programs is looking for a small number of apprentices.

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Westchester and Putnam Construction Craft Laborers, Local Union #60, will conduct a recruitment from January 3, 2017 through January 16, 2017 for 10 skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.
Applications can be obtained at Local Union #60, 140 Broadway, Hawthorne, NY, every business day from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., every weekday, during the recruitment period. This is a limited application recruitment. Applications will be available for 10 business days or until 100 applications have been distributed, whichever comes first.

The Committee requires that applicants:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have a minimum of a 10th grade education. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
- Must have a valid driver’s license. Apprentices may be required to operate company vehicles.
- Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
- Must have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction.
- Must be physically able to perform the work of a skilled construction craft laborer, as determined by a physical agility test and a signed affidavit, which includes:
- Lifting and carrying objects and equipment weighing up to 80 lbs. for extended periods of time.
- Using a shovel to load approximately half of a cubic yard of material into a wheelbarrow, wheeling it 30 feet, and depositing it into a container.
- Working continually on their feet.
- Having the ability to distinguish color-coded materials and supplies.
- Working in extreme weather conditions and temperatures for extended periods of time.
- Working in restricted or confined spaces.
- Working off of scaffolds or platforms at heights of 20 feet or more.
- Working in ditches and trenches up to 20 feet deep.
- Working near moving traffic.

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Operating Engineers, Local Union #30, will conduct a recruitment from February 06, 2017 through February 17, 2017 for 25 stationary engineer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.
Applications can be obtained at Local Union #30, 16-16 Whitestone Expressway, Whitestone, NY between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications must be returned via U.S. Postal Service certified mail and postmarked no later than March 03, 2017.
Note: Local #30 will administer a comprehensive math exam to all applicants who successfully file an application. The highest scoring 50 applicants on the comprehensive math exam will be offered the opportunity to take the Specific Aptitude Test Battery (SATB) administered by the New York State Department of Labor. Dates for all testing will be provided after applications are received. A score of less than 85% on the math exam will disqualify the applicant from entry into the program.
The Committee requires that applicants:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
- Must be legally able to work in the United States.
- Must sign a statement indicating that they are physically able to perform the work of a stationary engineer, which includes:
- Climbing and working off of stairs and ladders.
- Working in confined and dark spaces.
- Prolonged standing.
- Reading small numbers and/or markings.
- Communicating in loud working conditions.
- Working in environments that could cause exposure to dust, chemical odors, and hazardous materials.
- Working in extreme temperatures.
- Working and/or walking on slippery surfaces.
- Wearing personal protective equipment, such as respirators, ear protectors, and face shields.
- Lifting heavy objects weighing up to 60 lbs.
- Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
- Must be willing to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Must participate in an interview, if selected.
- Must have a valid driver’s license to operate company vehicles.
- Must have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction.

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Finishing Trades Institute of New York will conduct a recruitment from December 20, 2016 through December 19, 2017 for 50 metal refinisher apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.
Applications can be obtained, in person only, from the Finishing Trades Institute of New York, 45-15 36th Street, Long Island City, NY, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month during the recruitment period.
The Committee requires that applicants:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as GED or TASC).
- Must sign an affidavit stating that they are physically able to perform the work of a metal refinisher, which may include:
- Lifting and carrying heavy equipment and buckets weighing up to 70 pounds.
- Working from ladders, scaffolds, and personal lifts at heights exceeding 100 feet.
- Working outdoors in all kinds of weather.
- Must attend a three-day orientation.
- Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by a site evaluation and personal statement. (More information will be provided during a three-day orientation.)
- Must be able to read, hear, and understand instructions and warnings in English.
- Must be able to travel throughout the five boroughs to reach job sites.
- Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
