The Top Spot:
The Saint Thomas Aquinas College softball team recently raised money to help with research and awareness of Cystic Fibrosis. The Spartans gave a $300.00 check to Mrs. Allison place during a double-header against C.W. Post. The Place family recently lost Jimmy place to the disease.
In total, the members of the women’s softball team and senior class committeee were able to raise over one thousand dollars which will be donated to the cause.
Memebers of the softball team are also planning to do a walk at Albertus Magnus High School on June 3 to benefit the foundation.
Pelham’s Victoria Tiso is a senior utility player for the team and currently she is hitting .231 with four RBI in 20 games played this season.
College Sports Notebook:
Dominican College Wears Crown Once Again
The Dominican College softball team, which won its third straight Central Atlantic Athletic Conference (CACC) title by beating Bloomfield (NJ) College, 9-0, in the title game, has earned its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
Four teams will participate at each of 16 regional sites in double-elimination tournaments. Regional competition will be held May 4-6.
The Lady Chargers will participate in the East 2 regional site portion of the bracket which will be hosted by No. 3 C.W. Post University.
Dominican has an overall record of 37-15 and posted a 4-0 record last week during play at the CACC Championships, where junior shortstop Julie Plante of Swansea, MA, was voted tournament MVP.
Bloomfield, which finished 32-22, was sparked by Krystina Poloni of Pearl River. The junior alumna of Pearl River HS led the Deacons with 39 RBI, finished second with a .500 slugging percentage, tied for second in home runs with six, and her .331 batting average was third-best on the team.
Joining Plante on the CACC all-Tournament squad are teammates Delaney Childers of Johnstown, OH, a junior pitcher; senior outfielder Deidre Jeppson of Sylmar, CA, junior catcher Ashley Corrao of Staten Island, and sophomore first baseman Paige Berza of Cypress, CA.
Mortarboard musings
- Yorktown resident John Ranagan, a junior midfielder for Johns Hopkins University's lacrosse team and the only sophomore to earn first-team all-American honors, is fifth leading scorer on his team with 18 points. The team, which has a record of 10-3, is coming off a 10-9 overtime victory over Loyola before a capacity crowd of 6,000 at the Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore, MD. Loyola (12-1), which had its 12-game winning streak snapped, will play at Denver in the East Coast Athletic Conference semifinals on Wednesday. Johns Hopkins plays its annual homecoming game against Army at Homewood Field Saturday.
- Westchester Community College standout golfer Anthony Siguil, a graduate of New Rochelle HS, was named the "Mid-Hudson Conference Athlete of the Week." Siguil shot a 79 on the 6,500-yard Wiltwyck Country Club course in Kingston, to win the individual title at the Ulster CC Tournament.
- Pat Farina, an alum of Mahopac HS, continued his hot streak with a homer and two doubles to help the Westchester CC baseball team defeated visiting Rockland CC, 14-4. The Vikings will be seeded either No. 1 or No. 2 in the Region XV Tournament and will open up play, at home, on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against either Dutchess CC or Ulster CC.
- Four softball players at Westchester CC have been named to the all-Mid-Hudson Conference Team: sophomore pitcher Carolyn Farmer, Yorktown HS; freshman pitcher/first baseman Sara McKenna, Hendrick Hudson HS; sophomore shortstop Jessica Negron, Saunders HS; and sophomore infielder/outfielder Nicole Angelo, Mahopac HS.
- Four Manhattanville softball players earned All-Conference Honors as Katie Pitcher was first conference, and Ashley Dell, Alyssa Taylor and Jessica Van Gallen each made it to the second team All-Freedon Conference.
- Manhattanville College held their annual Athletics Awards Banquet yesterday. The Co-Male athletes of the year went to soccer player Eros Olazabal and baseball player Dan Fiorito the female athlete of the year went to two sport athlete Emy Cote.
