DMX Mural At Rapper's Yonkers Childhood Home Unveiled By City

YONKERS, NY — Entertainer Earl Simmons, better known as DMX, was honored with a restored mural at the public housing complex in Yonkers where he was a former resident.

The performer died in April after suffering a "catastrophic cardiac arrest" a week after a drug overdose.

Yonkers Arts was commissioned by the city to restore a mural at Calcagno Houses, near School Street. Residents asked that the restoration include a tribute to DMX. The public work of art also honors Boyce “Scoop” Coleman, a former Calcagno Homes resident, who died saving a child from drowning in the Hudson River and was featured on the previous mural.

Members of the late musician's family attended the unveiling ceremony this week, along with city and public housing leaders, including Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.

"May this mural remind everyone that one young man from Yonkers had a dream to rap and that same young man from Yonkers went on to reach millions across the world with his rhymes and words," DMX's fiancee Desiree Lindstrom told those gathered. "On behalf of Earl's children, thank you Yonkers for the tribute."
