Family Flicks: "Sita Sings the Blues"

SITA SINGS THE BLUES - January 20-22
Director Nina Paley (82min, USA, 2008)  Not Rated - Recommended for ages 9+

A beautifully realized animated feature based on The Ramayana of Valmiki. Vividly stylized in bold, almost luminescent colors, this film combines various styles of animation, drawing on sources as varied as Hindu artworks, bold quasi-art nouveau abstractions, and
post-Betty Boop song and dance routines.

Through numerous layers of storytelling that examine the complexity of mythology, religion, history, culture, family, and, most of all, the nature of love, Sita Sings The Blues draws parallels between the ancient Hindu text and modern attitudes to love and fidelity.

Featuring an incredible score of 1920s jazz numbers by Annette Hanshaw, this is a remarkable and enormously enjoyable film however you choose to approach it.
