Intro to Philanthropy, the Nonprofit Sector, & the Moral Imagination

In two sessions, the students will learn about the development and size of the philanthropic and nonprofit sector in the US, what the major institutions are and how they operate, and the role of the moral imagination in their development.  There will be an exploration of personal guidelines for charitable giving.  Current issues such as the Citizens United Case and social networking will discussed.  A course packet will be provided by the instructor at the first session.


Warren Ilchman, a PH.D. from the University of Cambridge, has been a professor at Berkeley, Indiana University, Boston University, and the University at Albany.  He has also taught at Williams and Harvard.  He has been the Asia Adviser to the Ford Foundation, executive director of the Soros Fellowship for New Americans and has served as presidenr of Pratt Institute.
