"Light Matter" Opens at the Pelham Art Center

Using luminous new media, six contemporary artists harness and explore light – dazzling and ordinary – as both subject and form in this exhibition created especially for the Pelham Art Center. Curated by Lisa A. Banner,Light Matter is on view from May 4 through June 30.

The opening reception will take place on Friday, May 4, 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m, and the exhibit will remain open until June 30. The reception is free and open to the public. During the opening, visitors of all ages may participate in a free art workshop and learn to usechiaroscuro, the use of light and dark, in their art projects.

About the Exhibition

Artists use light in different ways to shape their materials, reveal and create form, and convert its energy into something that can be seen and experienced.

By working with light as both subject and medium, the artists in this exhibition use a variety of new media to create magnetizing substance with an elusive force. Artists Bryan Graf, Jeph Gurecka, Sharon Louden, Beatrice Pediconi, Chris Smith, and Joe Winter all harness different aspects of the interaction of light with matter, whether through bubbles and transient reflections on water; energy emitted by light’s electric and wild activity; or light’s steady capacity to alter color.

The artists explore the properties and results of these interactions, and they create work of dazzling interest by showing the energy produced by light on form. Through drawing, sculpture, assemblage, video, photography, and digital imaging, these six artists transform our everyday experience of light into something extraordinary.

Light Matter will feature the work of Bryan Graf, Jeph Gurecka, Sharon Louden, Beatrice Pediconi, Chris Smith, and Joe Winter.
